Things to Know:

You must test your heater early, before it starts getting cold, to ensure it’s working properly. We recommend checking your heater in September. Follow this link for instructions on how to check your gas wall heater.

Note that it is normal for your heater to give off a burning smell the first few days that the heaters are back on for the year.

If you are using a gas heater, you must have a working CO2 detector.

Note that Myrtle, 35th and 41st street properties all use a boiler heating system. Our scheduled time to turn on the heat is mid-November. We will email you instructions closer to the date, on everything you need to know and do before the heaters are switched on; until then, familiarize yourself with the information below:

How to Use Your Radiator:

Turn the knob on the left of the heater either OPEN ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT FOR HEAT or TIGHTLY SHUT ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT FOR THE LEAST HEAT. Keeping the knob in any middle position causes extra water backup and additional clanking and noise in the pipes.

What’s Normal:

There will be a burning smell the first few days that the heaters are back on for the year. When the heaters start-up in the evening and again in the morning there will be some hissing and clanking, due to the old nature of the building and this steam heat system. Let us know if you notice any dripping- please put a bowl and make a maintenance request. Thank you!
